In 1814 Regency-era London, young Mary Wollstonecraft-Godwin (16), an aspiring writer, meets the charismatic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (21) while visiting Scotland with her stepsister Claire. Upon returning to London, Mary and Percy rekindle their connection despite his marital status. Mary embarks on a passionate relationship with Percy against her father William's wishes, leading them to flee together with Claire in tow. Their idyllic lifestyle is short-lived due to financial struggles and the tragic loss of Mary and Percy's infant daughter. Brooding over these tragedies, Mary becomes obsessed with resurrecting the dead. While living with Lord Byron and John Polidori, she participates in a bet to write the scariest horror novel, ultimately penning 'Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus'. However, when 'Frankenstein' is initially attributed to Percy due to contemporary prejudices against women writers, Mary must fight to claim her own work.
Directed by Haifaa al-Mansour, 'Mary Shelley' (2017) is a biographical drama that explores the tumultuous life and creative journey of Mary Shelley, the famed author of 'Frankenstein'. The film charts Mary's transformative years from a young writer to an iconic figure in literature, weaving together her complex relationships with renowned Romantic poets Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron. Set against the backdrop of early 19th-century Europe, 'Mary Shelley' delves into themes of passion, rebellion, loss, and creation, culminating in Mary's groundbreaking literary achievement that continues to resonate today.
